WHAT ARE FLOWERSFlowers are looked at in many ways.Especially in the point of view of the nature,and in the point of view of people.The nature has created flowers in the flowering plants and trees for a biological purpose.Botanically flowers supply a mechanism for the union of sperm and eggs.Those who have less knowledge about reproductive process of trees may wonder that trees have sperm and eggs.But no wonder they have them in flowers as in people and animals.Various and attractive colors, patterns,fragrance are the contributory factors for the success of this union of eggs and sperm. Especially insects and animals are attracted to flowers through these features of the flower.They act as vectors of sperm from flower to flower.
Flowers bloom , they wither and fall down reminding us of the uncertainty of life, despite how much beautiful and powerful our lives are.But flowers wither not in vain.They wither after contributing a big task.Reproduction.As a result trees yield fruits.For whom are the fruits?For people animals and birds. Flowers delight people. They have long been used by people to symbolize emotions on various occasions.Love, beauty,purity,sadness, happiness.
ROSE SYMBOLIZING LOVE
Although there are flowers and flowers in the nature,the rose, especially the red rose - the queen of all flowers ,is the only flower much revered by people throughout the history.It has been used and being used as the symbol of love and affection and beauty.People have attributed many meaning to the rose.
Rose is used to symbolize
1.Love and affection---Youths ,lovers, girlfriends,boyfriends, and even married use the red rose to express their love by rewarding one to their dears and nears.A red rose is rewarded by youths to express "I love you" instead of saying it by words.It is said that in the past beautiful Cleopatra used red roses to carpet her bed room when she received Antony.
WHITE FLOWERS SYMBOLIZING PURITY, INNOCENCE AND VIRGINITY
White flowers symbolize purity,innocence and virginity.In my country, Sri Lanka, people, especially
women, like to place a bowl of water containing white flowers floating upright at the main entrance
of their houses.By keeping so,they want to show the visitors to their houses that the inhabitants of the
house are pure innocent virgin.They think that the evil eye of the visitors can be neutralized
by the power of the white flowers.They further think that placing white flowers at the entrance can bring them luck.
